The convener of Operation Rebuilding the Broken Walls and Hope Initiative, Apostle Paul Akinselure, has expressed concern over the worsening security situation in Nigeria.
He described the rising cases of killings, kidnappings, banditry, armed robbery and violent attacks as alarming.
In a statement, Akinselure said the frequency of violent crimes had left many Nigerians living in fear and uncertainty, stressing that the situation requires urgent intervention from government at all levels.
The cleric who just celebrated his 43rd birthday attributed part of the country’s security challenges to what he described as a lack of genuine patriotism among some leaders, arguing that public office holders should prioritise the welfare, safety and future of citizens above personal interests.
The cleric said the persistence of insecurity has fuelled public concerns about the effectiveness of efforts to tackle the crisis, noting that many Nigerians are questioning why the situation has continued despite repeated government assurances.
According to him, the insecurity has had devastating consequences for families and communities, with many people losing loved ones, livelihoods and access to education. He added that farmers are unable to cultivate their lands safely, businesses have suffered losses, and several communities continue to live under the threat of attacks.
The cleric called for a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s security architecture to address evolving security threats, emphasising the need for strategies that reflect current realities. He also renewed calls for the implementation of state policing, saying that decentralising policing with appropriate constitutional safeguards, oversight, funding, training, and accountability could improve intelligence gathering, rapid response, and community-based security operations.
Akinselure urged political leaders to demonstrate courage and commitment in addressing the country’s security challenges, emphasising that protecting lives should remain the government’s foremost responsibility. He called on Nigerians to remain united despite political, ethnic and religious differences, expressing hope for a country where citizens can live, work and travel without fear.
The cleric also offered prayers for families affected by insecurity, security personnel and the nation’s leaders, expressing hope for lasting peace and stability across the country.
