ActionAid Nigeria, alongside key civil society groups and democratic movements, has launched the Movement for the Transformation of Nigeria (MOTiON) — a nationwide platform to mobilise citizens against poverty and institutional injustice.
The movement was unveiled in Abuja on Friday during a #PotsAndPan protest marking the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, themed “Ending Social and Institutional Maltreatment by Ensuring Respect and Effective Support for Families.”
ActionAid Nigeria’s Country Director, Mr. Andrew Mamedu, said MOTiON would drive citizen participation in tackling poverty, strengthening governance, and promoting transparency.
He noted that with about 139 million Nigerians living in poverty, according to the World Bank, the initiative would provide a coordinated approach to addressing systemic inequality and poor governance.
Mamedu urged government compliance with the Electoral Act 2022, improved funding for anti-corruption agencies, and adherence to transparent public procurement processes.
He reaffirmed ActionAid’s goal of helping five million Nigerians move out of poverty by 2035, stressing that effective implementation at the sub-national level remains critical.
Convener of MOTiON, Mrs. Hauwa Mustapha, said the platform would unite pro-democracy movements, women and youth groups, and social justice advocates to champion policies that ensure social equity.
She listed MOTiON’s key focus areas as credible elections, expansion of school feeding programmes, efficient cash transfers, anti-corruption reforms, and job creation.
Participants at the rally carried placards demanding good governance, equity, and improved social welfare for Nigerian families.
