The Convener of Operation Rebuilding the Broken Walls and Hope Initiative, Apostle Dr Paul Akinselure, has called for greater accountability in the execution of public projects in Nigeria after observing a deteriorating, abandoned building at the Irele Local Government Secretariat in Ondo State.
Akinselure expressed concern about the state of the building, which he said was constructed not long ago, and questioned why contractors responsible for substandard or abandoned public projects were not being held accountable.
In a statement following his recent visit to Irele Local Government Area, he also criticised the alleged waste of public funds on projects that were either abandoned or poorly executed.
He questioned the effectiveness of the contract-award process, arguing that contractors who received public funds should be held accountable for their performance and the quality of the work delivered.
According to him, the abandonment of public projects without consequences undermines development and encourages further waste of government resources.
He said roads and other infrastructure projects were often awarded at high costs, yet some were left incomplete, with those responsible allegedly escaping accountability.
Akinselure also expressed concern about the attitude of some citizens who celebrate individuals despite concerns about how they handle public projects, saying that temporary financial benefits should not take precedence over the long-term development of their communities.
He urged Nigerians to demand transparency from public officials, question the implementation of government projects and insist that contractors fulfil their contractual obligations.
The cleric maintained that contractors who received public funds but failed to deliver projects to the required standards should be held responsible.
He said Nigeria’s development would remain difficult to achieve without effective accountability mechanisms to prevent the misuse of public resources.
Akinselure called on relevant authorities and citizens to take a firmer stance against impunity in the execution of public projects, stressing that contractors should not be allowed to escape responsibility for abandoned or poorly executed projects.
