The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has denied reports alleging that it imported petrol with high sulphur content into Nigeria, describing such claims as “false, malicious, and misleading.”
In a statement issued Friday, the refinery clarified that the shipment referred to in media reports was not finished petrol (premium motor spirit, PMS), but rather an intermediate feedstock — a semi-processed input that requires further refining before it becomes usable fuel.

“Dangote Petroleum Refinery has noted reports claiming it is importing finished petrol (PMS) with high sulphur content into Nigeria. These reports are false, malicious, and misleading,” the company said.
“The cargo in question is an intermediate feedstock, not finished petrol, and will be fully refined in our units to meet Nigerian and international quality standards.”
The refinery stressed that as a world-scale facility, it processes a range of crude oils and feedstocks in line with global best practices to optimise product quality and yield.
It further disclosed that all import transactions are supported by verifiable quality certificates shared transparently with relevant regulatory authorities.

The company said it remains willing to make all documentation publicly available “in the interest of full transparency and accountability.”
Dangote Refinery, which operates within a free trade zone, noted that its exports of petroleum products to the United States and Europe—two of the world’s most tightly regulated markets—underscore its compliance with global quality benchmarks.

“Our operations are built on transparency, quality, and the goal of advancing Nigeria’s energy independence,” the statement added. “We refine and sell only high-quality fuels that meet all Nigerian and international standards.”
The 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery, located in Lagos, has been described as Africa’s largest and a strategic asset in Nigeria’s effort to end fuel import dependence.
