The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has announced a probe into alleged exploitative practices in Nigeria’s banking, telecommunications, and aviation sectors.

Ondaje Ijagwu, the FCCPC’s director of corporate affairs, revealed in a statement on Sunday that the investigation will run from December 3 to December 5. The inquiry will focus on poor service delivery, exploitative pricing, and possible violations of consumer rights.

The banking sector probe targets Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) over reports of network failures that restrict customer access to funds and disrupt the use of banking applications.

In the telecommunications sector, MTN Nigeria is under scrutiny following complaints of undelivered data services, unexplained data depletion, and inadequate customer support.

Air Peace Limited is also in focus for allegedly exploitative ticket pricing, particularly accusations of steep price increases for advance bookings on certain domestic routes.

The investigations will be conducted under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018, which grants the FCCPC authority to address practices that undermine consumer rights and disrupt market fairness.

Ijagwu stated that the companies will be required to appear before the commission on specified dates to provide information and responses. The findings will help the FCCPC make informed decisions and enforce regulatory compliance.

He reaffirmed the FCCPC’s commitment to protecting consumer rights and fostering a fair and accountable marketplace. Consumers are encouraged to report any further instances of poor service or exploitative practices through the FCCPC’s official channels.
