The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has thwarted an attempt to smuggle illicit substances into the Kuje Custodial Centre in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In a statement on Monday, spokesperson of the FCT Command, Samson Duza, said the incident occurred around 12:45 p.m. on Saturday during a routine search.

Duza identified the suspect as Njimogu Ikedi, who allegedly concealed substances believed to be cannabis sativa and other psychoactive drugs in his clothes while attempting to visit an inmate.

The FCT Command’s spokesperson said the Controller of Corrections in the FCT, Christopher Jen, immediately ordered the suspect’s arrest and has since been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for investigation and prosecution.

Jen cautioned visitors with ulterior motives to avoid the facility, stressing that vigilant officers would continue to expose such acts.

He also urged the public to support the Service’s efforts in reforming and rehabilitating offenders for public safety.

This latest interception came over a year after a woman was arrested for attempting to sneak similar substances into the same facility, disguising herself as a visitor and concealing the drugs in food packs.
