The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has officially announced that it will no longer permit data modification activities at any of its National Identification Number (NIN) enrollment centres across Nigeria. This directive was shared in a notice on Wednesday, urging NIN holders seeking to update their information to utilize the NIMC’s self-service modification portal instead.
While the self-service portal has been available for some time, many users still opted to visit enrollment centres, enduring long queues and extended waiting times for data modifications. The new policy aims to streamline this process as part of NIMC’s ongoing efforts to enhance the National Identity Management System.
In a post on its X handle, the Commission emphasised the benefits of the self-service modification portal, stating, “Modification activities will no longer be conducted in our enrollment centers. Instead, we have launched a convenient self-service modification portal, empowering you to update your information securely and efficiently online.”
NIMC highlighted several advantages of the new system, including the convenience of updating personal information from anywhere at any time, reduced waiting times, and improved data security through a secure online platform. The Commission noted that this change is expected to enhance overall efficiency and accelerate approval times for modifications.
However, feedback from users indicates that the transition to the self-service portal has not been entirely smooth. Some have reported difficulties receiving One-Time Passwords (OTPs) necessary to proceed with modifications. Others expressed frustration after making payments for data updates, only to receive messages indicating that their applications had been rejected, leaving them with no clear path forward.
The costs associated with using the self-service portal vary, with updating a date of birth priced at N16,340, while changing a phone number or name incurs a fee of approximately N1,522. The same charge applies to address modifications.
