Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has called for fair, transparent and growth-driven tax reforms to ease Nigeria’s economic hardship and strengthen investor confidence.
Speaking at the 2025 Press Week of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta Council, in Asaba, Oborevwori—represented by Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu—said taxation remained the backbone of government financing but must be structured to encourage productivity rather than stifle it.
He warned that multiple and complex tax regimes discourage investment, while weak enforcement limits government’s ability to fund infrastructure, healthcare, education and security. Oborevwori said his administration was broadening the tax base, plugging leakages and ensuring revenue was responsibly channelled into citizens’ welfare.
The governor described the unification of Nigeria’s exchange rates as a necessary reform to stabilise the naira, eliminate distortions and attract foreign investment. While acknowledging short-term inflationary pressures, he said the long-term gains—greater investor confidence, a level playing field and enhanced competitiveness—remain critical for states such as Delta with oil, gas and agricultural assets.
“These reforms influence commodity prices, wages and the survival of small businesses,” he said, adding that the state government was deploying targeted social interventions and infrastructure investments to cushion the impact.
Oborevwori also underscored the media’s role in shaping public understanding of economic policies, urging journalists to educate citizens, combat misinformation and uphold objectivity.
“Great influence comes with solemn responsibility,” he cautioned, warning that fake or sensational reporting could undermine national stability.
Keynote Speaker and Delta South Senator, Joel-Onowakpo Thomas—represented by Uzuazo Ikelegbe—said tax reforms and exchange-rate unification were central pillars of the Federal Government’s broader economic agenda.
Earlier, NUJ State Chairman, Churchill Oyowe, said the event’s theme was designed to deepen policy conversations and reaffirm the media’s role as both watchdog and bridge between government and citizens. He commended the governor’s support for press freedom and development initiatives under the M.O.R.E Agenda.
