Enugu State is gearing up to host the 23rd National Sports Festival, with preparations in full swing as the Coal City aims to deliver an unforgettable event.
The director-general of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, held a productive meeting with Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah at the Government House in Enugu on Tuesday’s evening. The meeting was part of strategic efforts to ensure effective planning and execution of the biennial multi-sport event.
During their discussions, Governor Mbah reiterated Enugu State’s commitment to organising a world-class festival that will not only showcase Nigeria’s athletic talent but also promote national unity and engage the youth.
In a statement signed by Kola Daniel, special assistant on media, office of the NSC’s DG, one of the significant outcomes of the meeting was the governor’s approval for the establishment of the Local Organising Committee (LOC).
The LOC comprises experienced professionals with extensive backgrounds in sports administration, youth development, and event planning, positioning the state for a successful and impactful festival.

Hon. Olopade emphasised the importance of the National Sports Festival, stating, “It is more than just a competition; it’s a legacy project that transforms host cities. Enugu has demonstrated impressive readiness and political will—both of which are essential for success. We are confident in their ability to deliver.”

Enugu State secured the hosting rights for this edition of the festival following a competitive bidding process, with the event scheduled for 2026. It is expected to attract thousands of athletes, coaches, officials, and spectators from across the nation.

Building on the successes of the Gateway Games 2024, Enugu State is determined to raise the bar even higher. The State Government has pledged to lay the groundwork for a landmark edition of the National Sports Festival—celebrating athletic excellence, fostering national unity, and creating a lasting legacy for the future of Nigerian sports.
